The Journey Begins: A Walkthrough of the Forest of Wolves in Black Myth: Wukong

Master the foundational combat of 'The Destined One' in the shadowy Forest of Wolves, a tutorial zone where you'll face Wolf Guais, learn to dodge mid-combo, and collect crucial crafting materials like Aged Ginseng. This epic adventure begins with deceptively simple steps that quickly teach you to build Focus, utilize Heavy Attacks, and find your first Shrine sanctuary.

The epic tale of the Destined One begins not with a roar, but with a whisper in the woods. After witnessing the legendary rebellion of Sun Wukong against the Court of Heaven, players find themselves in control of a new hero, stepping into the shadowy, wolf-infested Forest of Wolves. This is where the real adventure kicks off, a tutorial zone in disguise that quickly teaches you that in this world, even a peach might be more than it seems. The first steps are deceptively simple, but the forest holds many secrets and challenges for those willing to look beyond the main path.

First Steps and Foundational Combat

The opening moments are pure trial by fire, or more accurately, trial by claw. Taking control, the Destined One is immediately ambushed by two lesser Wolf Guais—a Wolf Scout and a Wolf Swordsworn. These basic enemies are perfect for getting your feet wet. Their attacks are slow and telegraphed, with extended sword swings that scream "dodge me!" This is your chance to master the light attack combo, a four-hit string culminating in a powerful overhead slam. Remember, you can dodge mid-combo, a crucial skill for staying agile. Defeating them rewards you with Experience (that yellow bar in the corner) and Will, the game's primary currency. After this skirmish, a mysterious voice calls out. Following the woodland path and scavenging to the right yields your first crafting material: x2 Aged Ginseng. It's useless now, but trust me, you'll want to hoard these like a dragon hoards gold for Chapter 2.

Mastering the Flow: Focus and Heavy Attacks

The next Wolf Scout introduces the Heavy Attack. Landing these fills your Focus Bar in the bottom right. Fill it completely to earn a Focus Point, the key to weaving devastating Heavy Attacks into your Light combos. Without a point, Heavy Attacks are slow and solitary. You can also charge them by holding the button, releasing for a powerful blow perfect for punishing slower foes. A pro tip? Focus doesn't drain from Light Attacks, it only builds up over time. It's all about that rhythm.

After this lesson, the path forks at a stone staircase.

  • Left Path: Another Wolf Scout guards a small chest with x5 Tiny Piece of Gold (vendor trash for extra Will).

  • Right Path: Leads to a Wolf Stalwart, an axe-wielding brute with wide, powerful swings. This guy is no joke. If he starts to overwhelm you, don't forget your Healing Gourd (press L1)! It's your lifeline.

Sanctuary and Guidance: The First Shrine

Defeating these threats reveals a golden trail leading to your first Shrine, nestled in a rocky ravine. This is your new best friend—a checkpoint where you can rest, refill your gourd, and eventually fast-travel. But be warned: resting respawns most regular enemies in the area. Here, you finally meet the source of the voice: the Keeper of Black Wind Mountain. He acts as your guide, pointing you toward the rebuilt Guanyin Temple and, crucially, gifting you the Incense Trail Talisman, allowing instant teleportation back to your last used shrine. Handy, right?

Beyond the Shrine: Shields, Perfect Dodges, and Exploration

The path forward introduces new enemy types. The Wolf Soldier carries a shield that can deflect your blows and stagger you. Time your dodges at the last second to achieve a Perfect Dodge, which slows time and creates an after-image, granting you a huge opening for a counterattack and bonus Focus. After crossing a bridge, the forest opens up. While linear, the game offers pockets of exploration. For example, to the left, another Wolf Stalwart guards a Purple Lingzhi mushroom at a tree's base.

A descending path soon splits.

  • Left Path: Follows a stream, leading past a Wolf Swordsworn, a Gentian plant, and a skittish Rat Guai. Interact with a stone head here to get the Skandha of Form Key Item. Upstream, you'll find more loot guarded by Croaky enemies—frog-like foes that jump and attack after a brief pause. Heads up: they explode in poison gas upon death, so back off!

  • Right Path: Leads to your first mini-boss. But first, explore the stream fully to harvest Jade Lotus from the water.

Back at the bridge, the right path leads to a Crow Diviner Yaoguai. This is a major step up in difficulty. It wields a reverse blade with quick, powerful combos and leaping leg swipes. Defeat it to loot a nearby Purple Lingzhi. You'll also see green wisps (wandering spirits); trying to grab them usually just nets a tiny bit of Will as they float away.

Baptism by Halberd: The Bullguard Mini-Boss

Return to the hill road and take the right path to face Bullguard. Make sure you're rested and healed up! This hulking foe wields a giant halberd with combos of horizontal slashes ending in a heavy overhead. His recovery time after attacks is your window to strike. At half health, he'll parry you and go for a killing blow, only for the Keeper to intervene and teach you your first Spell: Immobilize. This binds enemies for a few seconds, giving you free damage. Stronger enemies break free faster, and some bosses resist it entirely. Manage its cooldown and magic cost carefully—magic only refills at Shrines. Use your new tool to finally put the Bullguard down.

Scouting and Secrets: The Golden Cicada and Optional Challenges

Past Bullguard's gate, a path leads to a wooden balcony overlooking the temple. Here, an orange pillow marks a Meditation Spot. Resting here grants a free Spark Skill Point! Smash pots for Will and grab nearby herbs. A torch-marked tunnel leads to the next Shrine, which now offers expanded services: setting Spells, resetting your Skill Tree, and accessing a store.

After this shrine, a cutscene transforms you into a Golden Cicada. You can now fly to scout ahead, but your flight time is limited by a meter. Use it wisely to spot dangers.

The main path is straightforward, but exploration is richly rewarded. Key optional encounters include:

Optional Challenge Location & Details Reward & Notes
Wandering Wight In a tunnel guarded after the shrine. A formidable optional mini-boss. Defeat before the chapter boss to get its rewards. It disappears afterward.
Bandit Chief On a path left of the shrine, past fallen trees, guarding a bridge. Does not respawn. Guards a chest with loot.
Wolf Archer Guards a bridge. A perfect chance to use L2 to spin your staff and deflect arrows. Teaches projectile defense.
Ginsengling Appears when trying to pick certain "Aged Ginseng" plants. An earth-elemental enemy. Drops more crafting materials than a normal plant. Beware its poison root attacks.
Guangzhi Found in an archway past the archer's bridge. A fiery, twinblade-wielding mini-boss. Drops the Transformation Spell: Red Tides, letting you turn into him! Also, ring the large bell behind him for a secret.

The Temple Gates and the Final Confrontation

Whether you've explored every nook or taken the direct route, your goal is the Guanyin Temple. A tunnel (past or through the Wandering Wight) leads to a long wooden scaffold and the temple entrance, guarded by wolves including an archer. Defeat them, open the gate, and find the third Shrine.

Loot the temple grounds before proceeding!

  • Green wisp near a wolf statue (small Will).

  • Purple Lingzhi.

  • Chest through a small arch: x2 Tiny Piece of Gold, x2 Stone Spirit.

  • Another building has Gentian and breakable pots.

Now, get ready. Spend your Skill Points, equip your best gear, and prepare to face Lingxuzi, the Yaoguai King of the forest.

The Alpha Wolf: Boss Strategy - Lingxuzi

Lingxuzi is a massive, devastating wolf with well-telegraphed but deadly moves.

Attack Breakdown:

  1. Leaping Double Slash: His opener. Dodge the first, counter in the one-second gap before the second, as he often leaps away afterward.

  2. Howl: He curls up to charge a stunning roar. Run away when you see this!

  3. Stationary Slashes & Low Bite: Responses to melee pressure and a slow, leg-targeting lunge.

  4. Uppercut into Ground Slam (Danger!): At mid-range, he steps back, pauses sideways, then launches this combo. It does massive damage. Create distance immediately when you see the cue. If you survive, he's vulnerable after.

Strategy: Patience is key. Watch his tells, dodge precisely, and use Immobilize to lock him down for heavy, Focus-building attacks. Defeating him rewards the Grey Wolf Mask and a Mind Core.

Victory and Beyond

After the battle, the Keeper suggests looking around. Scour the arena for more mushrooms, lotus, and a chest. Then, head up the temple stairs. To the left, in front of a large statue, a small gold pot holds a Celestial Jade Lotus Pill, a permanent max health increase. When you're ready, exit through the back of the building to find a new Shrine, marking the entrance to the next chapter: the Bamboo Grove. The forest may be behind you, but the journey of the Destined One has only just begun.
